And even if you can’t afford to go on vacation, you can do like “yours truly” here and just move there. And for the last 10-years I’ve had no regrets. After all, this oasis of bliss is simply magical, even still. For no matter how long, you’ve visited our little slice of paradise; the sights, sounds, activities, glorious seafood and beautiful ocean breezes make everyone a regular, and both ready and willing to sacrifice most anything to get here for at least one week to take in the pristine beauties of South Carolina. So regardless how many times you’ve had the privilege to grace these pristine Southern shores, I want to share with you what I believe are the top 5 things you must put on your vacation bucket list once you pick up your first pair of beach sandals from our local Wings or Eagles. And trust me, it won’t take long for you to realize these are not just any excursions, but what I believe is the heart and soul of any native that calls this place home. So, grab all your beach accessories, leave your troubles behind, and let’s get into the Myrtle Beach adventure!

  1.  Stroll the Myrtle Beach Boardwalk at Sunrise

Ah, the boardwalk! Just mentioning it gets the heart reeling, especially when waking up with a fresh cup a Joe while toes are in the Myrtle Beach sand as the sun rises to greet you with “Hello”. The air is pleasantly cool, the animal life gathers their morning breakfast with invigorating chatter, and the plans for the day whisper fondly to not be in such a rush just yet. Besides the fact that it’s just you, a few insomniacs who finally gave up the fight, and an entourage of early risers, sun worshipers, surfers and reflective philosophical types, taking in all the beach gives without prejudice to anyone who longs to take it in.

It’s about a 2-mile stretch from the 14th Avenue Pier to the 2nd Avenue Pier should you venture that direction. At first, you’ll pass shops galore, the famous Myrtle Beach SkyWheel, and the salty air that you can’t help but breathe in with reckless abandon. You can of course stop and sit down on one of the benches along your journey should you choose or grab that second cup of coffee to get you through the start of the greatest morning you’ve had in you can’t remember when. And before you know it, the beach begins to open its blinds to all who would love to take in what it has to offer, as you have wrapped up perhaps the best part of your day since last year at this same time.

  •  Get Them Toes in the Sand at Myrtle Beach State Park

And as you probably already knew as you were making your Myrtle beach destination plans, we’re famous for 60 miles of shoreline, aptly named “The Grand Strand”.  However, if you ask most, the Myrtle Beach State Park is the gift that keeps on giving long after you’ve packed up and headed back home. In fact, it’s just south of the downtown’s sights and sounds, and this 312-acre stretch seems to merge perfectly with the rich South Carolina nature and the beautiful ocean in a way that makes you want to plop your chair down and stay for a while. Especially with things like the soft, snow-white sand between your toes and a rich maritime forest just behind you; not to mention the vast ocean stretching out before your eyes.  And by the way, don’t forget your journal and your camera because you’ll want to savor and remember this moment that nothing else can give you while you’re here.

Now to be sure you “must” pack a picnic.  Perhaps pack some local shrimp “po’boys” as we call it from Dagwoods, and then claiming your spot under some shady oaks, or if you’re like me, right by the water’s edge.  And the park has got everything you could possibly need for your time there with things such as clean restrooms, picnic shelters for the whole family, and even a fishing pier where you can see and smell all the amazing ocean wildlife enjoying their days adventures in typical animal workday fashion.  Or, if you’re here in the summer (duh), you should absolutely be ready to dip into the warm ocean waters, or take a stroll along the famous Oak Nature Trail where the pine scents never disappoint, and the flock of seagulls and oyster beds remind you that are smack dab in the midst of a rich and awe-inspiring ecosystem that always delivers.  And finally, with just a few bucks to park, you will have a front-row seat to the vast beauty that our ocean oasis longs to deliver, and why the locals never grow tired of calling this our home.

  •  When In Season, You Gotta Make Sure to Go to a Myrtle Beach Pelicans Game

Oh, and I almost forgot to tell you about my secret pleasure as well as a favorite local tradition: catching a Myrtle Beach Pelicans game!  And when in season, there is no better way to spend an evening than at TicketReturn.com Field (I didn’t name it, so don’t shoot the messengerJ).  But picture this if you will: the crack of endless bats, constant roars of the crowds, and the smell of fresh popcorn and a baseball game hot dog with zero rivals.  Also, the Pelicans, our beloved Single A affiliate of the Chicago Cubs, bring a small-town vibe with a big-league heart with an experience that’ll make you feel missing the beach for a couple of hours was just the right diversion.

And by the way, the tickets are easy on the pocketbook even at the Beach, and the fun to be had is a memory the family will be sure to remember.  The stadium is right off the infamous 21st Avenue North. It’s also just a hop, skip and jump from the beach, and the energy is what only a baseball game can deliver. Perhaps your kid will even get a foul ball for a souvenir while the mascots (the Pelican struts) head straight for your funny bone, and there is always some additional quirky entertainment to keep all the family entertained throughout the duration. And by all means, do not skip the concessions!  Get that hotdog I told you about, or perhaps some peanuts; or if you’re like me, you absolutely must have the “Pelican Burger” (man’s actual best friend), stacked high with everything but the kitchen sink!  And well, as you probably guessed; win or lose, the Pelicans game will give you a taste of the great spirit of Myrtle Beach—laid back, welcoming, and full of cheer for everyone involved.

  •  Devour Fresh Seafood from None Other than “Mr. Fish”

So, I’m sure it goes without saying that you can’t come to any beach, much less Myrtle Beach my friend, without indulging in our mout watering seafood.  I mean it’s a rite of passage for goodness sakes, and one you should embark on more than once while you are in our oasis of sheer goodness.  Now, as a local, my go to spot is none other than “Mr. Fish”, tucked away on Kings Highway, where this family-owned gem is where the ocean always delivers in a fresh and delicious way!  You’ll have your choice of mounds of golden-fried shrimp, oysters so fresh your feel you are eating the very tide itself, and hushpuppies (did I say hushpuppies?), that smacked down with a generous portion of butter could very easily become your guilty pleasure.

Or you could start with some good ole “she-crab soup.  It’s creamy rich, and with just a hint of sherry. Or you can dive into a seafood platter with flounder, oysters, scallops and crab legs, or order a Low Country boil with steaming potatoes, corn and sausage that spills out in a perfect “made in heaven” union with their seasoned shrimp.  Oh, and don’t forget the sweet tea, and add a little key lime pie as well.  Because here’s the deal: eating at a place like Mr. Fish isn’t just a meal, it’s a real smorgasbord of what the Myrtle Beach coast can deliver to the point that you’re just about ready for dinner and a movie with the family at the Beach house, now perfectly stuffed into Myrtle Beach oblivionJ.

  •  Catch a Sunset at the Marshwalk at the Famous Murrell’s Inlet

I’m saving my personal favorite for last, because sunset at the Marshwalk is a great experience, coupled with the variety of local eateries and lovers walking hand in hand with seemingly not a care in the world. Which brings tons of joy at the close of your day at Myrtle Beach. Not to mention that it is also considered the “Seafood Capital of South Carolina”.  Need I say more?

Hey, and please make sure you grab a spot at one of my favorite restaurants also, such as the “Dead Dog Saloon, and grab your favorite beverage and sit out on the deck enjoying at the scenery on this little slice of heaven called Murrell’s Inlet.  You’ll have your choice as the sun starts to go down of a plethora of bands the liven up the nightlife, and if you’re lucky. you might even spot a dolphin or two and get your own local feel of those living the dream of houseboat heaven, as you dream of adding that to your bucket list you almost forgot. It’s so beautiful y’all!  Oh, and be sure to bring that camera, your family and friends, and enjoy the picturesque beauty that may just make you a little sad that Saturday “check out” is fast approaching.

Why Myrtle Beach Steals Your Heart Like It Did Mine?

It was 10 years ago now with kids starting to exit the nest, that my wife and I decided to move “to the vacation” as I mentioned earlier. And I can tell you with full conviction that there is not a day that my wife and I take our golfcart down to the inter-coastal waterway or take a quick hop over the bridge to the ocean for an afternoon of solitude that we pinch ourselves to see if this dream is still true.  An afternoon filled with brisk conversation, a good book, and our chairs right at the ocean’s edge for an hour or two, that we realize we made the best decision in moving here.

Now maybe you’re not at the state in your life when you can “move to the vacation”.  I get it.  However, there is something about Myrtle Beach that draws you in, makes you think of the taste of the good life for a change, and that mostly just wants you to make sure, even if you can’t move here just yet, that you save up enough to make this joyous trip each season as Myrtle Beach will be sure to be a new line item in your budget, and you’ll be glad it did. We’ll be waiting!

Discover Myrtle Beach in Spring 2025: A Friendly Tour of the Boardwalk and Beyond

Spring is a fantastic time to visit Myrtle Beach, South Carolina, and in 2025, the sunshine, ocean breeze, and laid-back charm of this coastal destination continue to welcome visitors from around the world. If you’re planning your next getaway, this guide will walk you through one of Myrtle Beach’s most iconic spots—the Boardwalk—and highlight what’s new, what’s beloved, and what to look forward to this season.

Located in the heart of Myrtle Beach, the Boardwalk stretches roughly 1.2 miles along the coastline and offers an easy, fun stroll between arcades, eateries, gift shops, photo ops, and beach access points. This spring, there’s a buzz about the possible extension of the Boardwalk to 17th Avenue North, which would bring even more beachfront fun to explore in the future.

One of the first things you’ll notice is the relaxed atmosphere. Visitors can hop off the beach and grab a bite to eat in flip-flops and a T-shirt—no need to dress up. You’ll also find some friendly faces of the feline variety; the Boardwalk is home to a few well-fed resident cats, like the one that often lounges around Dirty Don’s Oyster Bar & Grill.

Speaking of food, there’s no shortage of options. From classic beachfront spots like Moe Moon’s and Peaches Corner (a Myrtle Beach landmark since 1937) to fair-style treats at Myrtle Fries and fresh brews at Hi-Fi Coffee Bar, there’s something for every craving. Hi-Fi has even expanded to two locations this year, showing the demand for cool drinks and cozy vibes is only growing.

Along the way, you’ll pass some must-visit attractions, including the Fun Plaza arcade, the massive Gay Dolphin gift shop (a multi-level institution for souvenirs), and plenty of quirky photo stations the city puts out each season. Be sure to stop at the SkyWheel, one of the Boardwalk’s most recognizable landmarks. This enclosed, climate-controlled ride isn’t about thrills—it’s a gentle observation wheel that offers stunning panoramic views, especially at sunset.

For families and adventure seekers, the area also features a cluster of Ripley’s attractions including the Mirror Maze, Haunted Adventure (recommended for ages 8+), Believe It or Not! Odditorium, and Ripley’s Crazy Golf. These attractions line both the Boardwalk and Ocean Boulevard, making it easy to spend an entire afternoon hopping between them. Pro tip: Ripley’s offers combo tickets that can save you money if you’re planning to visit multiple locations.

Another great feature of this area is accessibility. There’s a public restroom conveniently located across from the SkyWheel, and most Boardwalk businesses can be accessed both from the beachside and Ocean Boulevard.

If you’re wondering what’s happening at the old Pavilion site—the open area that once held amusement rides and zip lines—the future is still uncertain. While there were plans to redevelop it into a Market Common-style shopping and residential area, those plans appear to be on pause as of this spring. However, the open space is still occasionally used for festivals and special events.

As you explore the area, keep an eye out for small local businesses, gift shops like Paradise Beachwear, and arcades that bring back a sense of nostalgia. You’ll also find volleyball courts for sports fans and more bars and restaurants like Duffy’s Tavern and The Bowery, a legendary music venue with deep roots in Myrtle Beach history.

This spring, Myrtle Beach is all about sunshine, easy vibes, and the classic beach town feel that keeps people coming back year after year. Whether you’re planning a family trip, a spring break escape, or a long weekend to relax, the Boardwalk is the perfect place to start your adventure.

Thanks for joining us on this tour of Myrtle Beach in Spring 2025. To see more of what Myrtle Beach has to offer, including video tours of attractions mentioned here, just search Carmen and Brian Myrtle Beach on YouTube. Happy travels!

The Pelicans are known for more than just baseball. They’ve built a reputation for creating a fan-first atmosphere with creative promotions, themed nights, fireworks shows, and a dedicated mascot named Splash, a lovable pelican who adds extra fun for kids and families. The team’s front office has been recognized with awards for its marketing and community engagement, helping cement the Pelicans as more than just a sports team—they’re a pillar of Myrtle Beach’s cultural identity.

On the field, the Pelicans have a rich history of competitive success. They’ve won multiple division titles and have served as the launchpad for numerous MLB players who made their way to the big leagues. Since becoming a Cubs affiliate in 2015, fans have enjoyed tracking rising stars, some of whom would go on to make their mark in Chicago. The emphasis on player development ensures each season offers a mix of seasoned prospects and fresh talent eager to prove themselves on the way to the majors.

From a business and tourism perspective, the Pelicans are also a major driver of local economic activity. Home games draw thousands of fans each week during the summer months, many of whom dine at local restaurants, stay at area hotels, and explore the beachside attractions. For visitors to Myrtle Beach, catching a Pelicans game is often a highlight—offering an all-American experience with affordable ticket prices and easy access. The team also partners with local schools, non-profits, and youth programs, further anchoring its role as a community asset.

It’s a team that blends tradition, development, and entertainment in a way that brings locals and tourists together every season.

Whether you’re in town for a family vacation, scouting future MLB talent, or just looking for a night of fun, the Myrtle Beach Pelicans provide a memorable experience that captures the spirit of baseball in one of the South’s most beautiful beach towns.

Cherry Blossom Festivals https://themyrtlebeachpost.com/cherry-blossom-festivals/ Mon, 24 Mar 2025 23:56:43 +0000 https://themyrtlebeachpost.com/?p=742
Cherry Blossom Festivals

Did you know there are two National Cherry Blossom Festivals?

Cherry blossoms, or “sakura” in Japanese, are iconic symbols of spring known for their delicate beauty and fleeting nature. Their bloom is celebrated around the world, especially in Japan, where cherry blossoms represent renewal, the passage of time, and the ephemeral beauty of life. The cultural tradition of “hanami” — gathering under cherry trees to appreciate the blossoms — is a cherished springtime ritual that has inspired countless festivals globally.

In the United States, two major cherry blossom festivals stand out, each with its own unique charm and historical significance: the National Cherry Blossom Festival in Washington, D.C., and the International Cherry Blossom Festival in Macon, Georgia.

The National Cherry Blossom Festival in Washington, D.C., held from March 20 to April 13, 2025, marks the gift of over 3,000 cherry trees from Tokyo to Washington in 1912. This beautiful gesture of friendship has blossomed into a nationally recognized celebration. Each spring, more than 1.5 million people visit the nation’s capital to witness the iconic bloom around the Tidal Basin and participate in events that include the National Cherry Blossom Festival Parade, the Blossom Kite Festival, cultural performances on the ANA Stage, and the lively Pink Tie Party fundraiser. More details about this historic and vibrant event can be found at nationalcherryblossomfestival.org.

In Georgia, the International Cherry Blossom Festival in Macon offers a distinctly Southern take on the spring celebration. Known as the “Cherry Blossom Capital of the World,” Macon boasts over 350,000 Yoshino cherry trees — a far greater number than even Washington, D.C. The 2025 Macon festival runs from March 14 to 23, showcasing a wide range of family-friendly events, live music, arts and crafts, parades, and nightly concerts in Central City Park. Signature attractions include the Pink Pancake Breakfast, the Cherry Blossom Parade, and the Amusement Ride Midway. With an atmosphere that blends Southern hospitality and colorful pageantry, it’s a can’t-miss experience for festivalgoers in the Southeast. To learn more and plan your visit, go to cherryblossom.com.

Both festivals highlight the joy and community spirit that cherry blossoms inspire. Whether you’re drawn to the historical elegance of Washington, D.C.’s Tidal Basin or the vibrant, family-oriented charm of Macon, Georgia, springtime offers the perfect opportunity to enjoy these iconic blooms. Each location provides a unique backdrop to celebrate friendship, culture, and the beauty of nature, making a cherry blossom festival visit a memorable tradition worth experiencing year after year.

Kid Friendly Activities in Myrtle Beach https://themyrtlebeachpost.com/kid-friendly-activities-in-myrtle-beach/ Fri, 08 Nov 2024 02:44:14 +0000 https://themyrtlebeachpost.com/?p=725 Kid Friendly Activities in Myrtle Beach that anyone can enjoy, and many are free. Myrtle Beach, South Carolina, is celebrated for its iconic boardwalk, warm sandy beaches, and array of family-friendly activities that make it a favorite among vacationing families. But the best part? Many of these experiences are absolutely free, making it easy for families to soak up the local culture, nature, and entertainment without spending a dime. Here’s a detailed look at the top kid-friendly, budget-conscious activities in Myrtle Beach.

With 60 miles of beaches the ocean is certainly a big draw but you likely want to vary your activities, and you may need to navigate around a day or two of rain. The area experiences tropical kinds of weather with frequent rainstorms in the afternoon especially during the summer months. You also may be coming down to Myrtle Beach during other times of the year when a visit to the beach is possible but might not include swimming due to the ocean water temps. So let’s look at some Myrtle Beach Kid Friendly options.

The Myrtle Beach Boardwalk is an obvious starting point, offering nearly two miles of scenic views, shops, and entertainment options. As you stroll down the boardwalk, you’ll find free weekly events during the summer, like live music, festivals, and kids’ activities, especially at Plyler Park. During the warmer months, don’t miss the free nightly firework shows that light up the beach with vibrant colors and give kids an unforgettable beachside experience. Plus, this area is home to fun photo ops, and kids will love spotting iconic landmarks like the giant Myrtle Beach SkyWheel. The Skywheel is not cheap or free but it is a short ride. Another low cost option are the Helicopter flights that start as low as $20 a person, most find a $50-60 per person flight much more entertaining and the flight route shows you so much more of the beach and area. But we are getting away from low cost options with these mentions so lets get back to those.

For a more natural experience, head over to the Franklin G. Burroughs-Simeon B. Chapin Art Museum, one of Myrtle Beach’s hidden gems. Admission is free, and it features interactive exhibits, rotating art displays, and kid-friendly hands-on art projects that ignite young imaginations. Check the museum’s schedule ahead of time, as they frequently host family art workshops and themed exhibits that children adore. Close to the museum, the nearby Warbird Park offers a fascinating glimpse into local military history, with large retired aircraft and memorials that give curious kids plenty to see and learn.

Nature lovers will find endless fun at Myrtle Beach State Park, a fantastic spot for families to explore the region’s natural beauty. While there is a minimal parking fee, the beach access, trails, and picnic areas make it worth the visit. The park’s nature center offers free admission and has interactive exhibits showcasing the area’s unique flora and fauna, ideal for kids who love animals and learning about nature. Additionally, keep an eye out for the free educational programs led by park rangers, who often host hands-on demonstrations with everything from sea turtles to local bird species.

Kids with an adventurous spirit will love exploring the scenic Murrells Inlet MarshWalk. It’s a free, wooden boardwalk stretching along the coast that connects to a variety of scenic lookout points, where children can spot local wildlife like pelicans, fish, and even the occasional dolphin. This area also includes educational signs about the native habitats, so it doubles as an outdoor classroom with engaging tidbits about the region’s unique ecosystem. Stop by at sunset for a breathtaking view of the inlet – a memorable experience that perfectly captures the beauty of South Carolina’s coast.

If you’re visiting on a Friday night during the summer, take the kids to the nearby Music on Main series in North Myrtle Beach. It’s a laid-back beachside concert where families can bring chairs and blankets to enjoy live local bands. Kids can dance on the lawn or run around with new friends, creating the kind of carefree beach memories that make Myrtle Beach so special. This weekly event has a cozy, local feel, giving visitors an authentic taste of the area’s beachside charm and community spirit.

Lastly, for an evening activity that’s sure to impress, head over to Broadway at the Beach, a bustling entertainment complex filled with unique shops, attractions, and seasonal events. While some attractions cost money, many of the area’s biggest draws – like the evening firework displays during the summer – are completely free. Kids will love the magical atmosphere, with lively street performers, music, and water fountains that add an extra layer of fun. The tropical fish-feeding area is another free highlight, where kids can get up close to colorful koi fish that make for a captivating and educational experience.

From nature walks and art museums to lively concerts and scenic parks, Myrtle Beach offers a wealth of free, kid-friendly activities that capture the area’s welcoming spirit and rich culture. These activities allow families to experience the best of Myrtle Beach without breaking the bank, making it an ideal destination for memory-filled adventures.
